The Death of Åse

(from Peer Gynt, Edvard Grieg, arr. Victoria Bakewell)

Originally written for strings, Grieg’s “The Death of Åse” is reimagined here for cello and four double basses. This rich, low-voiced arrangement preserves the solemnity and emotional nuance of the original while exploring the unique warmth and blend of the ensemble. The cello carries the mournful melody with understated grace, supported by a bass texture that evokes depth and stillness.

Der Tod und das Mädchen

(Franz Schubert, arr. Victoria Bakewell)

This arrangement for five double basses preserves the core drama of Schubert’s original lied. One bass carries the vocal line, portraying the dialogue between the maiden and Death, while the other four divide the piano accompaniment to create a dark, resonant texture. The contrast between the solo line and the supporting ensemble brings out the emotional tension of the piece, allowing the bass to speak with both lyrical sensitivity and grave intensity.

Nocturne et Intermezzo

František Černý

This lyrical and understated work for double bass and piano, composed by Czech bassist František Černý, unfolds with a quiet intimacy. The Nocturno gently leads the listener into a dreamlike state—calm, fluid, and reflective—while the Intermezzo interrupts with sudden, unsettled energy before gradually returning to stillness. The piece feels like drifting into sleep: the Nocturno is the slow descent into rest, the Intermezzo captures those brief, involuntary jolts of wakefulness, and together, they paint a portrait of the liminal space between awareness and dreams.
